6-Day Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Rongai Route

A Picturesque and Rewarding Route for Climbing Kilimanjaro [6-Day Rongai Route]

Climbing Kilimanjaro via Rongai Route offers a uniquely wild and less crowded experience due to its remote location. As you ascend, you might spot large wildlife like antelope, elephants, and buffalo. Rongai Route is blessed with drier conditions than other sides of the mountain, resulting in fewer rainy days and clearer views of Kilimanjaro’s majestic peak.

Although the terrain is relatively flatter, it lacks the climb high, sleep low option, making it wise to allocate extra days for proper acclimatization. This route is recognized as one of the easier paths to Kilimanjaro’s summit, and it’s the only route that approaches from the north, with a descent via Marangu Route. Summit night from Kibo Hut involves a steep climb, following Marangu route toward Gilman’s Point and Uhuru Peak. Variations of this route exist, with some incorporating a longer journey that includes Mawenzi Tarn.

ADVENTURE ITINERARY

Arrival in Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted and transferred to the hotel for overnight accommodation. Your head guide will conduct a briefing, gear check, and assist with equipment rental needs.

Overnight at a lodge or hotel in Moshi.

Day 1: Nale Muru Gate to Simba Camp

You will begin your climbing Kilimanjaro adventure by departing from Moshi, embarking on a 4 to 5-hour drive through lush coffee plantations and the scenic Nale Muru village, leading to the Nale Muru gate. While permits are being arranged, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the beautiful wooded surroundings. As you ascend to Simba Camp, nestled near the first cave, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Kenyan plains.

Habitat: Montane Forest

[Elevation: 8,645 ft ∼ 2635 m, Trekking time: 3 to 4 hours].

Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikilewa Camp

Your day of climbing Kilimanjaro begins with an early breakfast, followed by a trek from Simba Camp to Kikilewa Camp, the second high-altitude stop. As you reach Kikilewa Camp, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the Kibo Volcano, weather permitting. This leg of the journey is more physically demanding than the previous one, so once you arrive at the camp, it’s advisable to rest and acclimate.

Habitat: Moorland

[Elevation: 11,906 ft ∼ 3,630 m, Trekking time: 5 to 6 hours].

Day 3: Kikilewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

On this day of climbing Kilimanjaro, you’ll start with an early breakfast before trekking to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located at the base of Mawenzi Volcano, Kilimanjaro’s second-highest peak. Upon reaching the camp, you’ll have lunch followed by a two-hour rest. In the afternoon, you’ll embark on an acclimatization hike towards Mawenzi Volcano, gaining about 200 meters (656 feet) in altitude. After the hike, you’ll return to Mawenzi Tarn Camp for dinner.

The acclimatization hike is a gentle trek with a slight altitude gain, designed to help your body adjust more effectively. Taking these acclimatization hikes seriously is crucial, as they significantly increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and help prevent altitude sickness.

Habitat: Semi-desert

[Elevation: 14,156 ft ∼ 4,315 m, Trekking time: 4 to 5 hours].

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to School Hut Camp

On this day of climbing Kilimanjaro, you’ll trek toward School Hut Camp, where the landscape transitions into a rocky semi-desert. Although the trek itself isn’t particularly challenging, it’s important to maintain a steady pace to conserve your energy for the final ascent to Kilimanjaro’s summit. Once you reach the camp, it’s recommended that you rest well, avoid any strenuous activities, and stay hydrated, as you’ll be making your ascent to Uhuru Peak that very night.

Habitat: Alpine-Desert

[Elevation: 15,744 ft ∼ 4,800 m, Trekking time: 5 to 6 hours].

Day 5: School Hut Camp to Summit to Horombo Hut

Your group will commence the final leg of climbing Kilimanjaro with a pre-dawn departure from School Hut Camp, making the challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak. Although the trek is not technically difficult, the extreme altitude can significantly increase the physical exertion required. To manage this, climbers will be paired in twos and accompanied by a personal guide who will monitor their health and progress closely. Proper acclimatization and pacing are crucial to avoid altitude sickness and ensure a successful summit.

Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro, you’ll have the opportunity to take in the breathtaking views and, if desired, explore the nearby glacier. Afterward, you’ll descend to Kibo Camp for a brief two-hour rest to recover from the strenuous ascent. The descent continues to Horombo Camp, where you can unwind and reflect on your accomplishment. The entire journey to Uhuru Peak and back to Horombo Camp covers significant elevation changes and requires careful attention to hydration, pacing, and overall well-being.

Habitat: Alpine-Desert

[Elevation: 19,336 ft ∼ 5,895 m, Trekking time: 6 to 7 hours].

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi

After breakfast and a heartfelt farewell with your climbing Kilimanjaro crew, you’ll descend to Mandara Hut for lunch before continuing to Marangu Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. A vehicle will then transfer you to your hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a refreshing shower, a celebratory dinner, and well-deserved festivities.
